Ray Dalio, one of the world’s most successful investors and entrepreneurs, cites principles as his key to success.
In 1975, Ray Dalio founded Bridgewater Associates, out of his two-bedroom apartment in New York City. Over forty years later, Bridgewater has grown into the largest hedge fund in the world and the fifth most important private company in the United States (according to Fortune magazine), and Dalio himself has been named to TIME’s list of the 100 most influential people in the world. Along the way Dalio discovered unique principles that have led to his and Bridgewater’s unique success. It is these principles, and not anything special about Dalio, that he believes are the reason behind whatever success he has had. He is now at a stage in his life that he wants to pass these principles along to others for them to judge for themselves and to do whatever they want with them.
Most people make bad decisions because they are so certain that they're right that they don't allow themselves to see the better alternatives that exist. Radically open-minded people know that coming up with the right questions and asking other smart people what they think is as important as having all the answers. They understand that you can't make a great decision without swimming for a while in a state of "not knowing." That is because what exists within the area of "not knowing" is so much greater and more exciting than anything any one of us knows.
Because I don’t know what you’re like and what your choices are I won’t be able to be specific. Nonetheless I can tell you that you need to get on a path that you feel good about and you can succeed at. You can find that by getting the best advice possible from people who know you best, care about you and know how to be successful. Also, experiment. But don’t stay doing nothing because that will become a habit that will ruin you. You need to get energized and have some successes that will encourage you to try to progressively do more on a path toward success. Find something that will do that for you and evolve from there. I don’t care if you volunteer working with people who inspire you doing things that inspire you. Do something that will get you out of your downward spiral and into a self-reinforcing upward spiral.
