Black and white portrait of Ray Dalio: Narrator and Creator of Life Principles

Principles are ways of successfully dealing with reality to get what you want out of life.

Ray Dalio, one of the world’s most successful investors and entrepreneurs, cites principles as his key to success.

Life Principle

Be specific in identifying your problems.

You need to be precise, because different problems have different solutions. If a problem is due to inadequate skill, additional training may be called for; if it arises from an innate weakness, you may need to seek assistance from someone else or change the role you play. In other words, if you're bad at accounting, hire an accountant. If a problem stems from someone else's weaknesses, replace them with someone who is strong where it's needed. That's just the way it is.

To me, the application of this principle takes true leadership (= discipline, self awareness, setting ego aside and zero commitment to complacency).

That’s what it takes. Your formula is a good one. True leadership = discipline +self awareness + setting ego aside + zero commitment to complacency. Some people say that’s not easy and look for an easy way hoping they can succeed without being strong and without doing the tough things. The truth is that one must become strong of mind and character and that happens by exercising these qualities the same way as one gets physically strong by exercising the body - bit by bit over time. Becoming strong by doing tough things to have the power to do what needs to be done is much easier than being weak and not being able to do them. There’s no way to do that other than to develop the right mind set habit. Once you have it you would hate to be any other way.
